This advanced seminar course involves an examination of the social construction of criminal justice responses to the crime problem. Issues in news coverage include discussions of police accountability, the role of lawyers and judges in the criminal justice system, and the effectiveness of criminal justice policy. Students also analyze how the criminal justice system is portrayed in popular film and television. Other topics include the impact of media representations on both public perceptions of law and justice issues and legal policy development.
